Acid Buffer 

An acid buffer is a product used to lower and help stabilise the pH of aquarium water. It’s especially useful if your tank water is naturally too alkaline (high pH) for the fish or plants you’re keeping. In many cases it’s used together with an alkaline buffer to set and maintain a specific pH range that’s right for your setup.

What It Does

  • It lowers pH by buffering your water; this means it helps resist sudden pH changes once adjusted.

  • In products like Seachem Acid Buffer, it also converts carbonate hardness (KH) into plant‑available CO₂, which can benefit planted freshwater tanks.

  • Works best when matched with an alkaline buffer (like Seachem Alkaline Buffer) to dial in a target pH range without big swings.

  • Most acid buffers are phosphate‑free, so they won’t promote algae growth.
