How It Works

Algae Straw works through a natural decomposition process:

  • The straw bundle gradually breaks down in the pond
  • Natural micro-organisms are released into the water
  • These organisms inhibit algae and blanket weed growth
  • The structure provides maximum surface area for oxygen and water interaction

Activation & Performance

  • Activation time: 2 to 4 weeks (depending on water temperature)
  • Effective lifespan: Up to 3 months
  • After this period, the bundle must be removed and replaced

Installation Instructions

  1. Calculate pond volume:
    • Length × Width × Average Depth (cm) ÷ 1000 = litres
  2. Determine the number of bundles required based on pond size.
  3. Float the Algae Straw in an area with strong water movement and oxygenation (e.g. near a waterfall or fountain).
  4. Anchor the bundle in place to prevent it from sinking or drifting.
  5. Ensure it remains floating and exposed to good circulation.

Usage Guidelines

  • Best introduced in early spring before algae blooms begin
  • Works best as a preventative treatment
  • Can be used throughout the year for continuous protection
  • Replace every 3 months

Important Information

  • Do not allow Algae Straw to sink and fully decompose in the pond
  • Do not use chemical algaecides while Algae Straw is present
  • If using algaecides, remove straw and place in a bucket of untreated pond water
  • Wait at least 2 weeks before reintroducing after chemical treatment
  • For best results, introduce new bundles 2–4 weeks before removing old ones
