NTL Spare Ammonia (NH₃) is a replacement reagent for testing ammonia levels in aquarium water. Ammonia is the primary waste product produced by fish and can also result from uneaten food and decaying organic matter. Although invisible, ammonia is highly toxic to aquarium fish, making regular testing essential for maintaining a healthy aquatic environment.

Understanding Ammonia

Ammonia is produced naturally through:

  • Fish waste.
  • Uneaten fish food.
  • Decaying plants and organic matter.

Beneficial bacteria in your biological filter convert ammonia into the less toxic compound nitrite. However, any detectable ammonia is considered unsafe.

Recommended ammonia level:

  • 0 mg/L (ppm) at all times.

What to Do if Ammonia is Detected

  • 0.2 mg/L (ppm): Add a filter booster such as Filter Starter.
  • 0.5–1.0 mg/L (ppm): Perform a 25% water change.
  • Above 1.0 mg/L (ppm): Perform a 50% water change.
  • Use an ammonia-removing filter media where appropriate.
  • If ammonia is present, also check other key water parameters including pH, KH, and nitrite.

How to Use

  1. Ensure the test tube is clean.
  2. Fill the test tube with 5ml of aquarium water.
  3. Add 5 drops of Ammonia 1 and 5 drops of Ammonia 2 reagent.
  4. Replace the cap and shake thoroughly.
  5. Wait 10 minutes.
  6. Compare the sample colour to the supplied colour chart with the test tube against the white reference area.
  7. A yellow colour indicates 0 mg/L (ppm) ammonia. Any green tint indicates the presence of ammonia.
