Dophin Filter- CF1200, CF12308, CF12508

Description

Dophin Filter- CF1200, CF12308, CF12508

Strengths / What These Filters Offer

  1. Compact external / canister design with built-in compartments
The CF series is promoted as allowing you to place a heater and CO₂ diffuser within the canister (i.e., less clutter inside the aquarium) rather than separate devices.

  2. Multiple media stages
With 3 or 4 baskets, you can layer coarse sponge, fine sponge, activated carbon, bio media, etc., optimizing mechanical + biological + chemical filtration.

  3. Relatively high advertised flow for their class
The CF12508, for example, claims 1,450 L/h, which is quite good for many medium tanks.

  4. Cost effectiveness
They are marketed as lower cost alternatives compared to premium brands (e.g. Oase) while offering similar features.

  5. Decent head / lift capacity in higher models
The CF12508’s 2.1 m head means you have more flexibility in placing the canister lower relative to the aquarium.

⚠️ Weaknesses / Caveats & Practical Considerations

  • Advertised vs real flow
Many hobbyists caution that flow ratings are under ideal conditions (no media, little head pressure). Once you add media, tubing, bends, lift, the real effective flow can drop significantly. This is a common issue across many filters. (Reddit users often mention “ratings are exaggerated” for budget filters.)

  • Durability & build quality
Because these are more “budget” filters, some components (valves, O-rings, hose connectors) may be weaker than premium brands. Regular maintenance (cleaning, checking seals) is more important.

  • Priming & maintenance
The filter will require proper priming (filling) and occasional cleaning of baskets, sponges, media. If not maintained, flow will degrade.

  • Internal heater / CO₂ setup compatibility
While they allow a heater or CO₂ diffuser inside, it's worth verifying that your heater / diffuser physically fits, and that heat / gas doesn’t overly disturb the filter operation.

  • Tubing size & fittings
Ensure you have matching tubing (12/16 mm or 16/22 mm) and that your aquarium plumbing supports the fittings.

  • Head / lift limitations on smaller models
For CF12008, with ~1.1 m head, if your canister is much lower than the tank, the flow could struggle.

  • Noise, leaks, wear
As with all canister filters, worn O-rings or poor sealing can cause leaks or noise. The CF12508 O-ring is sold separately in some shops (i.e. replacement parts exist)

🧮 “Which one to choose?” — Guidance

To decide among CF12008, CF12308, CF12508, consider:

  • Your tank size / volume
Match or exceed the recommended maximum. E.g., if your tank is ~120 L, CF12308 is a more suitable minimum, while CF12508 gives you headroom.

  • Height difference (lift)
If the canister will be much lower than the aquarium, you need a model with enough head pressure. In that case, CF12508 offers more flexibility.

  • Future-proofing
If you plan to upgrade or increase stocking, picking the stronger model (CF12508) might give more breathing room.

  • Budget vs performance trade-off
The more powerful models cost more; choose one you can maintain well rather than pushing a smaller filter too hard.
