6-in-1 Test Strip

The typical aquarium 6-in-1 test strip checks six key water quality parameters for freshwater aquariums:

  • pH – acidity/alkalinity of the water

  • Nitrite (NO₂⁻) – toxic to fish even in small amounts

  • Nitrate (NO₃⁻) – less toxic, but high levels promote algae growth

  • Chlorine (Cl₂) – harmful to fish & should be near 0

  • Total Hardness (GH) – amount of calcium/magnesium minerals

  • Carbonate Hardness (KH) – buffering capacity, helps pH stability


 How to Use the Strips

  1. Dip the strip briefly into the aquarium water (about 1–2 seconds).

  2. Remove and hold horizontally — don’t shake off water.

  3. Wait ~60 seconds for the pads to develop colour.

  4. Compare colours to the chart on the bottle/pack.

For best results: keep strips dry, don’t touch the pads with your fingers, and close the cap tightly between uses.

What the Results Tell You

Here’s what each result indicates in your tank:

  • pH:
    Ideal varies by fish species but generally ~6.5–8.5 for freshwater. Too low/high stresses fish.

  • Nitrite:
    Should be close to 0 — harmful at any detectable level.

  • Nitrate:
    Low to moderate is OK, high can lead to algae and stress.

  • Chlorine:
    Should be 0 — tap water treatments often leave residual chlorine.

  • GH/KH:
    These give you a picture of mineral content and pH stability — important for fish health and buffering capacity.
