AquaForest AF Natural Substrate 7.5L
AquaForest AF Natural Substrate is a nutrient-rich, natural substrate base designed for aquascapes and planted freshwater aquariums. Its carefully selected combination of peat and clay creates a fertile, nature-like environment that provides aquatic plants with readily available micronutrients and essential plant food.
The substrate is specifically designed to support the development of strong root systems and long-term plant growth. Its natural Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC) allows the peat and clay to absorb excess nutrients from the aquarium water, store them within the substrate and make them available to plant roots when needed.
This nutrient-storage capability also helps maintain a more balanced environment by releasing stored nutrients back into the water when levels become depleted.

Benefits
Supports Strong Root Development
The carefully selected peat creates favourable conditions for aquatic plant roots while supplying essential minerals and trace elements needed for healthy development.
Nutrient-Rich Growing Environment
AF Natural Substrate contains readily available micronutrients and plant nutrients, providing a fertile foundation for aquatic plants from the beginning of the aquarium setup.
Natural CEC Nutrient Storage
Both peat and clay have natural Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC). This allows the substrate to capture excess nutrients from the water and store them for later use by plant roots.
Helps Maintain Nutrient Availability
When nutrient levels in the water become depleted, stored nutrients can become available again, creating a more efficient and balanced nutrient environment for aquatic plants.
Improves Substrate Structure
Clay acts as a structural base, helping create a consistent substrate texture while also contributing to the natural nutrient-storage properties of the substrate.
Supports Biological Balance
The combination of peat, clay and carefully selected micronutrients creates a supportive environment for healthy plant development while helping maintain a balanced aquarium ecosystem.
How to Use
AF Natural Substrate is designed to be used as a base layer beneath gravel or sand.
Step 1 — Install Equipment
Install a heater cable if one is being used.
Step 2 — Add the Substrate
Spread AF Natural Substrate evenly across the bottom of the aquarium and compact it to create a layer approximately 2–2.5 cm thick.
Step 3 — Add the Top Layer
Cover the AF Natural Substrate with approximately 3 cm of gravel or sand.
Step 4 — Partially Fill the Aquarium
Gently fill the aquarium with approximately 15 cm of water.
To prevent disturbing the substrate, place a plate or dish on the bottom of the aquarium and direct the water stream onto it.
Step 5 — Plant the Aquarium
Place your aquatic plants into the prepared substrate.
Step 6 — Complete the Fill
Carefully fill the aquarium completely with water.
Coverage
10 L of AF Natural Substrate is sufficient for approximately a 200 L aquarium with a 100 cm × 40 cm base when used at the recommended substrate depth.
Important Information
AF Natural Substrate is rich in micronutrients.
For the first three months, AquaForest recommends avoiding additional fertilisers containing micronutrients unless plants show visible signs of micronutrient deficiency.
This helps prevent excessive accumulation of trace elements during the initial setup period.
pH Considerations
AF Natural Substrate can lower and stabilise the pH of aquarium water.
For accurate monitoring, AquaForest recommends using a suitable pH test or pH probe when setting up and maintaining an aquarium with this substrate.
Ideal For
- Freshwater planted aquariums
- Aquascaping setups
- Nature-style aquascapes
- Heavily planted aquariums
- Aquatic plants with extensive root systems
- Long-term planted aquarium setups
- Aquarists looking for a nutrient-rich substrate base
- Aquariums requiring natural nutrient storage through CEC
