Aquaforest AF Bio Sand 10kg 1–2mm
Natural Bio-Active Aquarium Sand for Faster Aquarium Maturation
Start your marine aquarium with a stable, biologically active foundation using Aquaforest AF Bio Sand. Made from high-quality natural calcium carbonate deposits, this fine white sand is designed to support water chemistry while helping accelerate the biological maturation of newly established aquariums.
AF Bio Sand includes specially prepared bottles containing laboratory-isolated strains of nitrifying bacteria and bacterial nourishment. Together, they help beneficial bacteria establish and multiply, supporting the development of the nitrogen cycle and helping eliminate harmful compounds more efficiently than traditional substrates alone.
With its natural white appearance and fine grain size, AF Bio Sand provides an attractive substrate for reef aquariums while also offering practical biological benefits.

Benefits
Accelerates Aquarium Maturation
AF Bio Sand is formulated to help establish beneficial nitrifying bacteria and accelerate the maturation process of a new aquarium. This can help the biological filtration system become established more efficiently.
Supports the Nitrogen Cycle
The included bacterial cultures are designed to support the development of nitrifying bacteria, helping facilitate the conversion and elimination of harmful compounds as the aquarium's biological filtration develops.
Helps Stabilize Water Chemistry
AF Bio Sand is naturally rich in calcium carbonate, which contributes to the stabilization of aquarium water chemistry and makes it particularly suitable for marine and reef aquarium systems.
Natural Reef-Aquarium Appearance
The clean, natural white colour provides a bright and attractive substrate that complements live rock, corals and other reef-aquarium décor.
Suitable for New & Mature Aquariums
AF Bio Sand isn't limited to new setups. It can also be used in mature aquariums as a substrate supplement, making it a versatile addition to an established reef system.
How to Prepare AF Bio Sand
For best results, prepare the sand before adding it to your aquarium.
-
Rinse the sand: Sand residue may develop during transportation. While this residue is safe for aquarium use, rinse the sand with RODI water to help minimize water turbidity.
-
Prepare saltwater: Pour the contents of both included bottles into approximately 3 litres of saltwater.
-
Mix thoroughly: Ensure the contents are well mixed.
-
Add to the sand: Pour the prepared solution into the bag containing the sand.
-
Leave for 24 hours: Allow the sand to mature for approximately 24 hours.
-
Keep the bag open: Do not close the bag during this period, allowing the bacteria to multiply.
-
Maintain the temperature: The optimal maturation temperature is approximately 25–28°C (77–82°F).
-
Add to the aquarium: After 24 hours, the sand is ready for use.
-
Add gradually: Introduce the sand into the aquarium in small amounts over several days.
-
Monitor parameters: Monitor aquarium water parameters as the substrate is introduced.
Important Information
- Sand residue may occur during transport and is safe for aquarium use.
- Rinsing with RODI water is strongly recommended to reduce potential water cloudiness.
- Do not seal the bag during the 24-hour bacterial maturation period.
- Avoid storing the prepared sand in cool conditions, as lower temperatures can significantly slow bacterial multiplication.
- Maintain approximately 25–28°C (77–82°F) during maturation for optimal bacterial development.
- After preparation, introduce the sand gradually and monitor water parameters.
- The stated grain size provided for AF Bio Sand is approximately 0.5–1.5mm.
