Bronze Cory

Overview

  • Scientific Name: Corydoras aeneus

  • Common Names: Bronze Cory, Bronze Catfish, Green Cory

  • Origin: South America (Trinidad, Venezuela, Brazil, Argentina, etc.)

  • Size: Around 2.5–3 inches (6–7.5 cm)

  • Lifespan: 5–10 years (sometimes longer with good care)

🌿 Tank Setup

  • Tank Size: Minimum 15–20 gallons for a small group

  • Substrate: Soft sand is best (they like to dig with their barbels)

  • Temperature: 72–79°F (22–26°C)

  • pH: 6.0–7.5

  • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water

  • Lighting: Low to moderate

  • Décor: Plants, driftwood, smooth rocks, and hiding spots

🍽️ Diet

Bronze Corys are omnivores and scavengers — but they shouldn’t rely solely on leftovers.
Feed a mix of:

  • Sinking pellets or wafers (main diet)

  • Frozen or live foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp

  • Occasional blanched vegetables

🫧 Behavior & Compatibility

  • Peaceful, social bottom-dwellers — must be kept in groups of at least 5–6 (they get shy and stressed alone)

  • Great community fish; compatible with small, peaceful species (tetras, rasboras, guppies, etc.)

  • Active during the day and love to “school” along the tank bottom

🐣 Breeding

  • Easy to breed in captivity.

  • Males chase females during spawning; eggs are usually laid on glass or plants.

  • Remove adults after spawning to prevent them from eating the eggs.
